Athena Article in Magazine for Environmental Managers

An article by Athena President Wayne Trusty, entitled "Incorporating LCA in Green Building Rating Systems", appears in the December 2009 issue of EM Magazine. The article discusses the emergence of Life Cycle Assessment as a critical methodology for dealing with the complex issues involved in designing, constructing and operating environmentally friendly buildings. First Athena Chair in Life Cycle Assessment

Dr. Getachew Assefa, one of the world's leading LCA experts, has joined the University of Calgary under the newly established Athena Chair in Life Cycle Assessment. Held in the university's Faculty of Environmental Design, the chair will focus on the application of LCA to new and existing buildings. Support was provided for the Athena Chair by FPInnovations-Forintek Division, Alberta Advanced Education and Technology and the Alberta Forestry Research Institute.

Update to Impact Estimator For Buildings Software Released

In October 2009, the Institute released an important update to our acclaimed Impact Estimator software. The Impact Estimator allows users to evaluate whole buildings and assemblies based on internationally recognized LCA methodology. Version 4 features increased functionality and flexibility for design teams, new regions, and more indicators of a building's impact on the environment.
