The Athena Institute is pleased to report that the position of Athena Chair in Life Cycle Assessment at the University of Calgary has been filled. The Search Committee has selected internationally recognized Industrial Ecologist Dr. Getachew Assefa to fill the five-year, tenure track appointment, commencing October 1, 2009.
The Athena Chair
The Athena Chair in Life Cycle Assessment was recently founded by the University of Calgary and is offered in collaboration with the Athena Institute. Based in the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS), the Athena Chair will advance life cycle assessment research to facilitate holistic, interdisciplinary and integrated approaches to design. The position will bring together a wide range of fields, scales, technologies, approaches and sectors.
Faculty of Environmental Design
The Faculty of Environmental Design offers a Master of Architecture and a Master of Environmental Design, as well as a PhD program. The Faculty has a long history and an international reputation in areas related to environmental design, ecologically-sensitive intervention, and sustainability. In addition to a strong regional focus in Western Canada, the Faculty is engaged internationally in research and teaching across North America, as well as in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
Dr. Getachew
A native of Ethiopia, Dr. Getachew is currently a Senior Researcher in the Department of Industrial Ecology at the School of Energy and Environmental Technology in the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr. Getachew has a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering from Addis Ababa University, a MSc in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and a Licentiate degree and PhD in Industrial Ecology, also from the Royal Institute of Technology.
Dr. Getachew’s research interests include household metabolism, technology assessment, systems analysis of energy from industrial waste, environmental assessment of the built environment, and development of a computer-based tool for comparing indoor quality versus the impact on the local and global environment of buildings and real estate.

In announcing Dr. Getachew’s appointment, EVDS Interim Dean Loraine Fowlow thanked the Search Committee, chaired by Professor Jim Love, for their diligence in recruiting an excellent field of candidates, and expressed gratitude to FPInnovations - Forintek Division for funding this opportunity for the Faculty of Environmental Design.
